How it's calculated

How to calculate tiles

Divide the area by the space each tile takes up with its joint, then add waste for cuts.

  1. 1

    Work out the area

    Length × width: a 10 × 8 ft floor is 80 sq ft.

  2. 2

Add the joint to the tile

    A 12 × 12 in tile with a 1/8 in joint takes up 12.125 × 12.125 in, or 1.02 sq ft. 80 ÷ 1.02 = 78.4 tiles.

  3. 3

    Add waste and round up

    With 10% waste: 78.4 × 1.1 = 86.2, so 87 tiles.

  4. 4

    Turn tiles into boxes

    With 10 tiles per box, 87 ÷ 10 = 8.7, so 9 boxes.
