How to work out room size
Three measurements are enough: length, width and ceiling height.
- 1
Floor area
Length × width. A 12 × 10 ft bedroom is 120 sq ft.
- 2
Perimeter
2 × (length + width): 2 × (12 + 10) = 44 ft. That is what you buy baseboard and crown molding by.
- 3
Wall area
Perimeter × ceiling height: 44 × 8 = 352 sq ft, without taking out doors and windows. For paint, use the paint calculator.
- 4
Volume
Area × ceiling height: 120 × 8 = 960 cu ft. Volume is what HVAC and ventilation sizing start from.
US residential code minimums (IRC)

| IRC R304.2 — smallest side | 7 ft (2.13 m) | In any horizontal direction; kitchens are exempt |
| IRC R305.1 — ceiling height | 7 ft (2.13 m) | Habitable space, hallways and basements with those uses |
