Parking ratio calculator
Find how many spaces a project needs from its floor area and the ratio your code requires, or the parking ratio of a design. See the lot area the spaces take up, aisles included.

How to calculate parking spaces
Codes usually ask for a number of spaces per so many square feet of floor area.
- 1
Find your code's ratio
Each city and each use (residential, office, retail) sets its own ratio, for example 3 spaces per 1,000 sq ft.
- 2
Divide the area and multiply by the ratio
Spaces = floor area ÷ base × ratio, rounded up. 20,000 sq ft at 3 per 1,000 sq ft needs 60 spaces.
- 3
Estimate the lot area
Multiply the spaces by the area each one takes, aisles included. At 325 sq ft per space, 60 spaces take 19,500 sq ft.
- 4
Or check the ratio of a design
Divide the number of spaces by the floor area and multiply by the base. 60 spaces on 20,000 sq ft is 3 per 1,000 sq ft.
Lot area by number of spaces
With the calculator's default area per space. Adjust it to your real parking layout.
| Spaces | Lot area (325 sq ft per space) |
|---|---|
| 10 | 3,250 sq ft |
| 25 | 8,125 sq ft |
| 50 | 16,250 sq ft |
| 100 | 32,500 sq ft |
| 200 | 65,000 sq ft |
