How it's calculated

How to calculate bricks

Divide the wall area by the space each brick takes up with its joint.

  1. 1

    Work out the net area

Length × height, minus doors and windows. A 20 × 8 ft wall with no openings is 160 sq ft.

  2. 2

Add the joint to the brick

    A modular brick (7⅝ × 2¼ in) with a 3/8 in joint takes up 8 × 2⅝ in, or 21 sq in: 144 ÷ 21 = 6.86 bricks per sq ft.

  3. 3

    Multiply by the area

    160 × 6.86 = 1,097 bricks. For a double-wythe wall, multiply by 2.

  4. 4

    Add waste

    With 5% for breakage and cuts: 1,097 × 1.05 = 1,152 bricks.
