How it's calculated

How to calculate drywall sheets

Same math as paint up to the area; then divide by the sheet area.

  1. 1

    Work out the wall area

    Perimeter × height: 2 × (12 + 12) × 8 = 384 sq ft in a 12 × 12 ft room.

  2. 2

    Take out the openings

    One door (20 sq ft) and one window (15 sq ft): 384 − 20 − 15 = 349 sq ft.

  3. 3

    Add waste

    With 10% waste for cuts: 349 × 1.1 = 383.9 sq ft.

  4. 4

Divide by the sheet and round up

    A 4 × 8 ft sheet is 32 sq ft: 383.9 ÷ 32 = 12.0, so 12 sheets.
